Google Selling Books Now
Jump Start News – We recently reported that Google is now in the hard drive space selling business. We now report that Google will start selling books starting early 2010.
Google Editions… that’s what the Google book store is going to be called essentially implying that Google is now getting ready to go head to head with Amazon, Barnes and Noble and thousands of book sellers out there. These books will be made available in the form of e-texts or e-books and the first round of offerings will include half a million-book titles. Google Editions will feature only those books for whom Google has the publishing rights.
Whether Google will also sell DVDs, music albums, videos and other forms of digital media and whether Google’s e-books will be Kindle and Sony Book Reader compatible, only time will tell. The search engine has already announced that all its book titles will use the open standards approach currently supported by Sony, which allows e-books to be read using Internet browsers. For each book sold, publishers will receive 63% of the total price paid. Google will keep the rest or share the proceeds with a retailer if one is in the picture.
